DJ Spooky: How a Tiny Caribbean Island Birthed the Mashup

Friday, July 13th, 2007

Paul D. Miller, also known as DJ Spooky, That Subliminal Kid, has been producing beat-heavy electronic music for more than a decade. From his early solo trip-hop efforts to his more recent collaborations with jazz giants, Spooky has always approached music from multiple angles at once. He has the chops of a musician, the genre-blending ear of a disc jockey and the conceptual vision of a performance artist.

It was therefore no surprise when Trojan Records, a reggae label entering its 40th year, asked DJ Spooky to put together a mix showcasing tracks from its massive archives. When assembling >In Fine Style: DJ Spooky Presents 50,000 Volts of Trojan Records, one of several mixes commissioned to mark the Trojan birthday, Miller found countless parallels between the Jamaican reggae scene of the 1960s and ’70s and the digital mashup ecosystem of today. (See Upgrading Jamaica’s Cultural Shareware: Trojan Records at 40.)

Dr. Augustine Fou creates Flickr Cash: Possibly the first e-commerce Mash Up!

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

Dr. Augustine Fou who is also known for his work on contextual commerce has created a site called FlickrCash which is a powerful search engine for Flickr. Sounds normal so far right?? well just wait a second. And you’ll see why this guy totally Pwns. Once a term is entered into the search box and queried one will receive thousands of thumbnails on your screen relating to your search topic. So, now you’ve got a bunch of thumbnails, and you want to use one legitimately on your site (or you could search for those images within the creative commons). What Dr. Augustine Fou has done now is basically merged his Flickr search engine with what basically amounts to a peer to peer shopping cart. Another reason this is so cool is that Fou doesn’t own the photos, or pay for their hosting, he just found a way to utilize an existing service and merge it with e commerce. We’ll see what Yahoo has to say about it:)

A word from Dr Augustine Fou
“I created FlickrCash because I found many really beautiful photos on Flickr but could not use them for “commercial” purposes like design work for clients, because there was no way to document I had a license to use it. FlickrCash is BOTH a search/find interface to more quickly find images on Flickr, and also a way to document that you have a license to use a specific image.”

Mainstream interpretation of the “ad”
An online political video has sparked controversy from the Internet to the print media. The ad, a riff on Apple’s “1984″ advertisement directed by Ridley Scott to promote the first Macintosh computers, has been altered by an anonymous editor as a campaign ad for Barack Obama.

In the altered version, the “overlord” on the video screen, who is brainwashing the masses (a jab at IBM when the commercial first aired), has been replaced by video clips of Hillary Clinton. In the clips, she soothingly reassures the masses that she wants to have a discussion with them, that she doesn’t want to tell them what to do, that discussion is good.

In the original commercial, a woman yielding a sledgehammer runs through the auditorium, chased by police, and throws the hammer at the screen, which explodes, thereby freeing the brainwashed masses. In the altered version, the woman’s t-shirt has a Barack Obama logo on it. The text at the end of the commercial now says, “On January 14th, the Democratic primary will begin. And you’ll see why 2008 won’t be like “1984.”

The Apple computer logo has been replaced by a rainbow-colored letter ‘O’ and the address for Barack Obama’s website is shown.

The video is posted multiple times on YouTube, and a quick count shows that the video has been viewed at least 600,000 times.

Best of Bootie

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

Mashup, or bootleg, is a musical genre which, in its purest form, consists of the combination of the music from one song with the a cappella from another. Typically, the music and vocals belong to completely different genres. At their best, bastard pop songs strive for musical epiphanies that add up to considerably more than the sum of their parts.

Scary Mary

Sunday, February 11th, 2007

Mary Poppins recut as a horror film.

A re-cut trailer, or retrailer is a parody trailer for a movie created by editing footage from that movie or from its original trailers, and thus are a form of mashup. They generally derive humor from misrepresenting the original film: for instance, a film with a murderous plot is made to look like a comedy, or vice versa. They became popular on the Internet in 2005.
